The single most useful thing on a hot water call-out costs nothing: find the compliance plate and read the date. It is the fact that decides whether a fault is worth repairing, and you should not have to take anybody's word for it.
The diagnosis itself is the same as anywhere in Sydney. The water is soft, so limescale plays no part. A sacrificial anode corrodes so the steel does not, and the day it is spent the tank begins to go. That or a burnt element covers most of what we attend, and both are repairs on a tank that is otherwise sound.
What is a little different here is the timing. Whole streets went up inside a few years as the orchards were subdivided from the late 1940s, and systems have tended to be installed and replaced on similar schedules since.
That is not a prediction and nobody should replace a working unit because a neighbour did. It is a reason to know your own unit's real age rather than assume it, and to treat a neighbour's experience as information rather than as either a warning or a reassurance.

On either, whether somebody working elsewhere closed an isolation valve. Beyond those, leave it and ring.
